Meet Jason! He is an instructor at Friendly House and supporter of Light & Salt Learning.

"Friendly House in Phoenix, Arizona was first established in 1920 to assist new immigrants in acquiring skills necessary to acculturate into the United States.  More than 100 years later, Friendly House has evolved into a community based, multi-service nonprofit organization addressing the needs of our diverse community through: Education, Workforce Development, Family Support, Basic Needs and Immigration.  https://www.friendlyhouse.org/aboutfriendlyhouse

The Friendly House GED prep program is small, but impactful. We think of it as the modern-day equivalent of the one room schoolhouse:  Friendly House staffs one full time teacher dedicated to guiding students through all four GED exam subjects:  Science, Social Studies, Math, and Reading. While Friendly House is small, it also means we have the ability to individualize instruction and really meet each student exactly where they are.  GED Prep Instructor, Jason, describes the program:

I have 17 years of higher education teaching experience, but I’ve never had more earnest and hard-working students than those folks who come to Friendly House to get their High School Equivalency Diploma. When I joined Friendly House I quickly learned the biggest hurdle for our students was Math, Math, and Math.  I’m a reading teacher by training.  Much like our students, math wasn’t something that came naturally to me.  I scoured YouTube, prep books, and even my own notes from college, to build a curriculum. But, I dumped it all once I purchased access to L&S’s Workbook.  Everything is there for a successful class:  instruction, practice questions, answers, not to mention a thoughtful structure and sequence for teaching the material.  I’ve had four students in the past month alone pass the Math Reasoning exam.

Classes at Friendly House are free.  Our students’ access to internet prep materials is also free to them.  Friendly House covers the cost for every exam and practice exam students want to take.  Even so, as a small program, our resources are limited. One of the best things I can do for my students--one of the best ways I can guide my students toward passing the Math Reasoning exam--is to distribute one of Kate’s workbook to each of them.  Your help in reaching that goal is truly appreciated."
